Peter Smith: The Story of Gas

Untitled Document

How does Natural Gas get to your home?

A very good question and one that deserves a good answer. Just like electricity, natural gas is supplied to most peoples homes in the UK. Natural gas is very important to many people it heats their home and enables them to cook their food, and have a hot shower!

How?

Natural gas companies drill thousands of feet into the earth and use big wells and pumps to bring it to the surface.

Then they send the gas to your town through gas mains buried underground. Utility companies bring it to your house in smaller pipes.

Those pipes connect to the meter outside your house, which measures how much natural gas your family uses.

More pipes connect the meter to the gas appliances you use at home, like the boiler, water heater, gas fire or cooker.
